For the past six years I’ve been pointing out that the Clean Elections system has made the legislature more extreme. Here’s a post from 2006, quoting a post from 2005.
Legacy moderates survive but they are endangered. I’ve mentioned before that Conservatives always had a natural base and an army of supporters but they couldn’t get past the Chamber of Commerce types who controlled the money. Those gatekeepers are now meaningless.
With equal money, the candidate with the natural base and supporters will beat the candidate who happens to be a lobbyist favorite.
My prediction has come true and it’s now conventional wisdom that Clean Elections has empowered conservatives and made the legislature more extreme. Since I’m pretty happy with the current state of the Legislature, I’ve decided that Clean Elections has worked out pretty well. But for some reason, the Democratic Party activists and Establishment Moderates who originally pushed it aren’t happy.
So now, after finally realizing that Clean Elections empowers Conservatives, the Establishment folks have gone to the legislature and asked the knuckle dragging troglodytes to pretty please put a referendum on the ballot to repeal it.

President Barack Obama’s embrace of a national database to store the DNA of people arrested but not necessarily convicted of a crime is heartening to backers of the policy but disappointing to criminal-justice reformers, who view it as an invasion of privacy.
Others also worry the practice would adversely affect minorities.
In an interview aired Saturday on “America’s Most Wanted,” Obama expressed strong agreement as host John Walsh extolled the virtues of collecting DNA at the time of an arrest and putting it into a single, national database.

In May 2009, just five months into the Obama administration, the people of California launched a tax revolt in the biggest spending state in the nation. If one of the most liberal states in the Union is saying no to the soak-the-public philosophy of leftwing legislators, Obama socialism is in big trouble. The revolt in California quickly spread to the entire nation through the efforts of the Tea Parties movement, the most innovative, exciting and powerful grassroots force in the history of American conservatism. It is vital to the health of this country that the Tea Parties movement grow. More to the point: it is essential to American survival that the Tea Parties movement succeed. A specter is haunting America – the specter of a people rising.
