Regarding "Few young voters cast ballots in Arizona" (Republic, Sunday):
A 7 percent turnout for Arizona's youth voters is embarrassing. As the newly elected chairman of the Arizona Federation of College Republicans, I view this as a challenge. Turning out the youth vote for the Arizona Republican Party and Sen. John McCain will be a major focus of the federation this year.
I have noticed on my college campus (ASU at the West campus) that when students are educated on the issues, they are surprised at how Republican-leaning they really are. Furthermore, the focus of this election is much more important than empty rhetoric about "change" and "hope."
The next president could have the opportunity to make up to three appointments to the Supreme Court. As Republicans, we believe it is up to these justices to keep America on the right track and preserve the Constitution in the way our Founding Fathers envisioned it.
The next president's potential Supreme Court nominees will have the ability to drastically affect the America that my generation's children will grow up in. For their sake, I will work tirelessly with my fellow College Republicans to ensure the victory of Sen. McCain, as well as our congressional, statewide, and legislative candidates.
As the future leaders of the Republican Party, Arizona College Republicans realize the importance of this historic election and we are determined to ensure victories for Republicans this fall. - Matt Wharton,Peoria
