Story

May 102012

When Californians prepare to cast votes for state legislators and members of Congress in June, they’ll get a ballot unlike anything they’ve seen before.

Republicans will be startled to see Democrats on their ballot. Democrats will be shocked to see GOP candidates. The top two vote-getters will advance to November, regardless of party.

So when Californians enter voting booths for November’s general election, they might have a choice between a Republican and a Republican — or a Democrat and a Democrat. And they most likely won’t have a chance to pick a Green, Libertarian or other third-party candidate; those candidates probably won’t have made it onto the November ballot.

Some say the “top two” system will create a new breed of pragmatic, moderate California politicians more concerned about the commonweal than partisan zeal. Others predict it will only make primaries more chaotic — and perhaps more Machiavellian.

Either way, expect a lot of head-scratching as California takes its new system for its first full ride this year — and prepare for years of debate about whether it’s working as intended.

Kent Terry, Brother Of Fallen Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, Will Speak At The May 10 Pima County Sheriff’s Office Peace Officers Memorial Service. Brian Terry, a US Border Patrol Agent, was killed in the line of duty after he and fellow Border Patrol agents with the elite tactical BORTAC team were engaged while patrolling Peck Canyon, in Pima County, Arizona; 11 miles from the Mexican border. The agents came across five suspected illegal immigrants whom opened fire on them. During a firefight, agent Terry was shot and, due to his injuries, lost his life a day later on December 15th, 2010. Four of the suspects were arrested and two AK-pattern rifles found nearby were identified as weapons connected to the Fast & Furious scandal by the ATF and Department of Justice.

Kent Terry will focus his remarks to include his brother’s life of service to America as a Marine, local police officer and US Border Patrol agent. He will speak about the honor and sense of great personal pride in which Brian Terry served our nation.

Sheriff Babeu said, “We are truly privileged to have Kent Terry speak at our Fallen Officer Memorial, which focused on the life of duty and sacrifice that all law enforcement and our families commit to when they wear the badge and swear an oath to protect our community, even with their own lives. Brian Terry is a true American hero and rightly shall be honored at our memorial ceremony, along with all of our local fallen heroes.”

Each year between 140 and 160 Peace Officers are killed serving in the line of duty in the United States and their families are left to pick up the pieces. Since 1962, our Nation has celebrated the lives of these fine men and women, each year, during National Police Week.

The memorial service that will begin at 7 p.m. at the Peace Officer’s Memorial outside the Sheriff’s Office, 971 N Jason Lopez Circle, Florence, AZ. Attendees are asked to arrive by 6:30 p.m. to allow for an on-time start. Contact: Cheryl Chase at 520-709-4895 or cheryl.chase@pinalcountyaz.gov

***Red Alert***

HB2826

The Governor has HB2826, the elections consolidation Bill sitting on her desk.  She is getting deluged by city governments against her signing it.  Why?  Because most city governments are packed with union members and union members know they will lose control of these municipalities if she signs 2826 into law.  For them, it’s all about what’s in it for the unions.

PLEASE call Gov Brewer and tell her to act for the people, save our tax dollars and increase voter turn out by signing this Bill.  The people who will benefit outweigh the unions and should be given prime consideration.  In addition, she said she would sign it if amendments were made to it, which she outlined.  Those amendments were made; now it’s time for her to keep her word!

MEXICO CITY –  The bodies of 23 people were found hanging from a bridge or decapitated and dumped near city hall Friday in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, where drug cartels are fighting a bloody and escalating turf war.

Warning: Graphic Image.

Authorities found nine of the victims, including four women, hanging from an overpass leading to a main highway, said a Tamaulipas state official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to provide information on the case.

Hours later, police found 14 human heads inside coolers outside city hall along with a threatening note. The 14 bodies were found in black plastic bags inside a car abandoned near an international bridge, the official said.
