PHOENIX — A Wyoming man has given more than $1.5 million to help defend Arizona’s controversial immigration enforcement measure in court, Gov. Jan Brewer’s office said Thursday.
The contribution from Timothy Mellon of Saratoga is the largest to Brewer’s defense fund, which has amassed more than $3.6 million from 41,000 donors nationwide. Mellon could not immediately be reached for comment.
The latest legal bills released Thursday show Brewer’s office has spent more than $440,000 for the first two months of defending the law.
The bills, obtained through a public records request by The Associated Press, are for work performed through June by Phoenix law firm Snell & Wilmer. They do not cover July hearings in federal court before a judge Susan Bolton temporarily blocked enforcement of the law’s most controversial provisions.

Take down JD’s signs today: Senate candidate JD Hayworth has one last plea for help: please remove JD Hayworth campaign signs along the roadways? Most communities require political signs to be removed no later than Friday, Sept 3. If you see any of his signs along the paths he would greatly appreciated if you could remove and dispose of them. Most are hung with zip ties and need only a pair of heavy-duty scissors or utility knife to remove. If you are able to volunteer to remove signs in addition to the ones along your usual path, please email jennifer@jdforsenate.com.

The MSM is all abuzz with headlines blazing: Feds sue Arizona sheriff in civil rights probe.
As Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio gets vilified in the press, take a deep breath and remind yourself that this career lawman held top management positions throughout the world — infiltrating drug organizations on behalf of the government — and capping his 32-year federal career as head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for Arizona before being elected to administer the nation‘s third largest sheriff’s office in 1993.
Arpaio didn’t just fall of the turnip truck, as the saying goes. Neither is he easily intimidated.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s official statement regarding the federal lawsuit against his office by the U.S. Department of Justice for his alleged refusal to turn over documents is followed by a statement from his Washington, D.C. attorney, Robert Driscoll. Both can be read here.
Michelle Malkin’s conservative blog also carries a piece on the topic written by Doug Powers.

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Thursday the Justice Department “sandbagged” him with the lawsuit it filed earlier in the day against him.
The Justice Department claims in its suit that the controversial Arizona lawman refused for more than a year to turn over records in an investigation into allegations his department discriminates against Hispanics.
“It surprises me because our lawyers have been meeting with the Justice Department officials the last week and we were cooperating,” Arpaio told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto. “Now all at once, I’m being sandbagged and they’re suing me.”
The lawsuit calls Arpaio and his office’s defiance “unprecedented,” and said the federal government has been trying since March 2009 to get officials to comply with its probe of alleged discrimination, unconstitutional searches and seizures, and having English-only policies in his jails that discriminate against people with limited English skills.
Arpaio had been given until Aug. 17 to hand over documents it first asked for 15 months ago.

Maricopa County Treasurer Charles “Hos” Hoskins announced that the 2010 property tax bills will soon be in the mail, and said you should not be surprised if your tax bill goes up, even though the assessed value of your property, as determined by the County Assessor, may have gone down.
Property owners can view a more detailed copy of their tax bill on the County Treasurer’s website at: http://treasurer.maricopa.gov.
Hoskins explained that it is impossible to generalize, based on the assessed value of a particular property, how much the property tax bill will be, because, among other things, that depends on where you live. The taxing jurisdictions, county, cities, schools and special districts, you live in determine your specific tax rate. And, such things as school bonding and budget overrides that voters in your school district approved are also included.

Democrat Attorney General candidate Felecia Rotellini has said she was unaware that one of her major campaign contributors is actively working to harm Arizona’s economy by calling for a boycott of the state.
Rotellini has accepted $4,176 from the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW), which supports a boycott due to their opposition of SB 1070 Arizona’s anti-illegal immigration law.
Republican Attorney General nominee Tom Horne said, “Now that she knows, she should return the money. We’ve seen the effects of these boycotts: business travel has slackened, conventions have been canceled, various groups have refused to come to Arizona, and many Arizona jobs have been lost. My opponent opposed SB 1070. That cannot be changed. But, the least she can do is return the money contributed by a group pushing to boycott Arizona.”
The question Rotellini should be asked is why she is in concert with out-of-state unions that are committed to influencing Arizona’s laws through economic coercion?

An indignant President Obama complained last week, “I can’t spend all of my time with my birth certificate plastered on my forehead.” Fine. How about plastering a copy of his presidential oath of office there instead? The kowtowing commander-in-chief is in dire need of a daily reminder that his job is to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States” — not international law or global diktats.
Case in point: Last week, Obama’s State Department handed in America’s first-ever report to the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights in conjunction with something called the “Universal Periodic Review.” In short, the 29-page document is a self-aggrandizing report card touting the administration’s far-left domestic and foreign policy initiatives for the world’s approval. The report boasts of racial- and gender-bean-counting in the executive branch; Justice Department outreach to Muslim grievance groups opposed to post-9/11 security measures; teachers’ union payoffs in the federal stimulus law; continuing commitment to closing the Gitmo detention facility for enemy combatants; and the illusory lifesaving effects of Obamacare on minorities through “expanding community health centers” (which have yet to be built, but not that it matters in our Nobel Peace Prize-winning president’s age of post-achievement).

The South Korean government, in an effort to raise money for its military, wants to sell nearly a million antique M1 rifles that were used by U.S. soldiers in the Korean War to gun collectors in America.
The Obama administration approved the sale of the American-made rifles last year. But it reversed course and banned the sale in March – a decision that went largely unnoticed at the time but that is now sparking opposition from gun rights advocates.
A State Department spokesman said the administration’s decision was based on concerns that the guns could fall into the wrong hands.
“The transfer of such a large number of weapons — 87,310 M1 Garands and 770,160 M1 Carbines — could potentially be exploited by individuals seeking firearms for illicit purposes,” the spokesman told FoxNews.com.
“We are working closely with our Korean allies and the U.S. Army in exploring alternative options to dispose of these firearms.”
Gun control advocates praised the Obama administration for taking security seriously.
