FIFTY-THREE SOLDIERS FROM THE AZ GUARD RETURN TO PHOENIX FROM IRAQ The first element of Arizona Guard unit comes home from Iraq. Deployed last fall, members of the 855th MPs 1st Platoon completed over 200 combat missions throughout Ninewah Province and the Tigres River Valley. Their overall goal was to provide a trained, skilled and independent Iraqi Police force. They also conducted humanitarian aid missions in support of Provincial Reconstruction Team operations such as food drops, school drops and project proposals for roads, water and electrical improvements. One of the largest operations conducted was security for the U.S. Embassy representatives overseeing the Iraqi elections, ensuring the voting was conducted in a secure environment without violating free election regulations throughout Ninewah Province.GOV LEARNS OF BO ACTION FROM MEDIA: It’s not bad enough the Obama administration has hauled Arizona before the United Nations “Human Rights Council” for its overwhelmingly popular immigration law. Last night, Governor Jan Brewer told Greta Van Susteren the administration did not have the decency to tell her the state’s lawmakers had been put on the same level as Cuban jailers and North Korean torturers. The Justice Department Strikes Arizona Again Eric Holder’s Justice Department really seems to believe that its primary responsibility is to help aliens who violate federal law as opposed to tax-paying citizens of the United States. What else can one say about the latest action filed by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division against Arizona community colleges claiming they violated federal law when they asked noncitizens applying for jobs to produce their green cards? Brewer Appoints 2 Superior Court Judges in Maricopa County Gov.Jan Brewer today announced the appointment of Douglas Gerlach and Peter Thompson to the Maricopa County Superior Court. Doug Gerlach has been licensed to practice law in Arizona since 1981. He graduated from Arizona State University in 1981, practiced law with the firm Brown & Bain (now Perkins Coie) before serving as a Maricopa County Public Defender. Since 2000, he has been a partner with the law firm of Jennings, Strouss & Salmon. He has spent most of his career handling primarily business-related litigation. He replaces retiring Judge Barbara Mundell.
Peter Thompson has been licensed to practice law in Arizona since 1985. He graduated from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and received his undergraduate degree from BYU in 1982. He has worked as a Maricopa County Superior Court Commissioner, has served as a staff attorney for the City of Mesa Police Department, and served as the president of the East Valley Bar Association. He replaces retiring Judge James Keppel
