The United Nations said on Thursday governments must respect the rights of all migrants, in a statement apparently targeting measures including Arizona’s crackdown onillegal immigrants and French expulsions of Roma.

The statement from the Global Migration Group — combining 12 U.N. agencies, the World Bank and the International Organisation for Migration — said it was concerned about the rights of tens of millions of migrants in ‘irregular’ circumstances around the globe.

Such people can include illegal immigrants or migrants whose asylum requests are not considered legitimate.

“This is our response to the global trend to confine migration policies solely within the narrow context of security and border control,” U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay told reporters.

A little more than a week ago, I pointed readers to a video of an Arizona political guru Chris Herstam, on the Sunday Square Off program on KPNX Channel 12 in Phoenix, declaring that little-known Republican Ruth McClung is dead even against Rep. Raul Grijalva, a Democrat who so vehemently opposes his own state’s law against illegal immigration that he has called for other states to boycott Arizona.

A couple of folks doubted those internal polls existed; the Arizona Daily Star couldn’t find anyone to confirm Herstam’s claim.

In mid August under the heading “The Perversion of American Democracy: Death by a Thousand Cuts” we opined that in a series of continual steps the current Administration was subverting the underpinnings of our form of government by usurping and exercising power proscribed by the Constitution. Over time, we said, this can amount to the death of federalism by a thousand cuts.2JBCD00Z

Sadly, we may have understated the speed with which our 234-year-old constitutional system with its built in allocation of power between the national government, the states and individuals and the checks and balances between the three branches of the federal government is eroding. What is now more visibly apparent is the biggest power grab by an imperial Executive Branch in the last 75 years and the Congressional elections of 2010 may be our only real chance to stop the bleeding before we wake up and find a fundamentally different America. Far fetched? Alarmist? We don’t think so.

In case after case, the public has shown its disapproval of the policies of the current Administration, both in its legislative agenda and the pompous pronouncements of the president and his appointees. There was no consensus to radically change our health care system so the Administration resorted to deceit, legislative bribes and procedural chicanery to get it done. The damage to health care delivery and affordability is only now beginning, but for Mr. Obama who promised fundamentally to change America, it is a cornerstone of the change (with more to come) he really had in mind. It signals that more and more Americans in the years ahead will be dependent on big government.

Although it has been pulled back from this year’s legislative agenda because of widespread opposition, the so-called cap and trade legislation is nothing more than a device for the government to control a vast swath of the economy, a coveted goal of the political left.

Current economic conditions point to less revenue for the state than previously projected, legislative budget analysts said Sept. 29, putting more pressure on lawmakers to consider new cuts to services such as education and health care.

Staff from the Joint Legislative Budget Committee predict Arizona’s $8.5 billion budget will face a midyear shortfall of up to $825 million. Most of the increase from the previous forecast for a shortfall of up to $700 million is due to the still-ailing economy producing less tax revenue than expected.

Lawmakers heard the new forecast as Finance Advisory Committee economists said the state’s economy is starting to recover but the rebound will be slow and gradual.

“Definitely, the worst has passed. There are signs the economy is growing again (but) we should not budget or plan for any sharp acceleration any time soon,” said Brian Cary of Salt River Project.

A revenue forecast based on economic modeling and the views of the Legislature’s own budget staff and of outside economists has state revenue growing at 2.4 percent this fiscal year.

Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick is telling supporters she’s already lost in an attempt to raise money and encourage volunteers.

Kirkpatrick, who represents Arizona’s 1st District, sent a Wednesday fundraising e-mail Wednesday with the subject line “GOSAR WINS,” a reference to her GOP challenger, dentist Paul Gosar. “In an upset victory, the [National Republican Congressional Committee] – and Sarah Palin-backed candidate unseated Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick by less than 1,000 votes,” the e-mail trumpets, running for five paragraphs before letting its readers know that it’s all a hoax — and a plea for time and money.

The e-mail is a remarkable shift from standard fundraising e-mails that rely on assurances of victory to help drum up more dollars. Read the rest.
