Federal judge sets hearing for Arizona’s new immigration law http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/state/federal-judge-sets-hearing-for-arizona%27s-new-immigration-law
Brewer to feds: Reduce state’s Medicaid obligation
Gov. Jan Brewer asks Congress to exempt Arizona from its obligations to fund health care for low-income Arizonans, or to at least relax the requirement.
Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) on immigration reform: “The federal government has to get in. They have to secure our borders and they have to set up common sense rules to give people a pathway to citizenship.”
Gov. Christie said the state of New Jersey itself can do “very little” to fix this problem, however.
On people who enter legally: “[They] have to be given a pathway to become citizens.”
On those who enter US illegally: “My view is that they need to get on the back of the line.”
Christie says they should return to the country of their origin “if practical.”
“I don’t think that you’re going to be able to say every person who is in this country illegally is going to go back to their country of origin. That’s not going to happen. But, I don’t think, Sean, that people who are here illegally should be able to cut [in] the line in front of people who are doing the process the right way,” Christie said.
Federal leviathan will use tax dollars to intimidate states
The Obama administration has announced that it intends to sue Arizona over its new law that will allow the state to assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The stated goal of the lawsuit is to block implementation of the popular Arizona law before it takes effect on July 29. The unstated – but perhaps more important – objective of the administration is to intimidate other states where similar legislation is being considered.
The Obama administration’s position on immigration policy is clear. The administration’s goal is a sweeping amnesty for millions of illegal aliens and the virtual dismantling of all meaningful immigration-related enforcement. Not only is immigration enforcement not a priority for the current administration, but it is a threat to their overall political strategy that must be attacked aggressively.
A lawsuit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice is no idle threat. This administration is working in concert with amnesty advocates such as the American Civil Liberties Union to try to make Arizona’s defense as burdensome and costly as possible. Even if Arizona ultimately prevails – as many legal scholars believe the state will – victory is unlikely to come swiftly or cheaply.
With polls showing he’s on the losing end of the public opinion tide in favor of Arizona’s new illegal immigrant law, President Obama has decided to construct a wordy barrier of speeches along the insecure border issue with Mexico.
The latest speech comes Thursday morning, when the Democrat goes to American University in Washington to repeat his view that securing and sealing the nation’s southern frontier against the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs, traffickers, criminals and terrorists is only a part of the solution to what he describes as “our broken immigration system.”
The president says he wants a comprehensive package of immigration reforms, including the …
… volatile issue of addressing the millions of illegal immigrants already residing in the country. He’s also said he sees no congressional “appetite” for such a comprehensive measure now. Which in Washington-speak means, “We’re doing nada now.”
