“I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.”
–James Madison
James Madison warned often of the encroachments of a central government, and warned that a central or federal government needed to be kept in check by a balance of power. The cornerstone of this balance of power was the will of the people being governed expressed not only in Congress but ultimately through the sovereignty of the individual states.
The federal government has over-reached and encroached on state sovereignty for decades – and under the leadership of both Republicans and Democrats. Each time the federal government has gone unchecked it has become bigger and bolder – and continues to do so with each usurping of power belonging to the states. The passing of Obamacare, just might be the coup de grace, or at least a giant step toward bringing down the republic.
What do I mean by such harsh rhetoric? Consider the Weimar Republic. This is the name of the parliamentary republic established in Germany in 1919. Although it was governed by a constitution, much the same as we are, the republic fell to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in the 1930’s through a usurpation of power. Simply put, it was done by passing legislation that enabled Hitler to circumvent their constitution.

Hundreds of people supporting Arizona’s new law cracking down on illegal immigration rallied near the state Capitol on Saturday afternoon in soaring temperatures. Hundreds of motorcycle riders kicked off the downtown Phoenix rally by riding in a procession around the Capitol. Supporters waved American flags and some carried signs that read “What part of illegal don’t they understand?” Demonstrators on Saturday sweated as temperatures reached 105 degrees. Some shaded themselves with umbrellas and clamored to buy cold water and ice cream from vendors.
“For them to come here when it’s over 100 degrees and stand in the heat — it’s awesome,” said 32-year-old Stephanie Colbert of Glendale. Colbert, who works in a restaurant, said those who disagree with the law and boycott Arizona are misguided because they hurt the immigrant community they aim to support. “The hospitality industry has a very large population of immigrants, legal and illegal,” she said. “It’s those people’s jobs that are in jeopardy.” Colbert and her mother, 53-year-old Pattie Sheahan of Phoenix, said they strongly support the new law, which requires police conducting traffic stops or questioning people about possible legal violations to ask about their immigration status if there is “reasonable suspicion” they’re in the country illegally. “Everybody needs to obey the same laws,” Sheahan said. “If you want to come here, there’s ways to do it. Do it the right way.”
