Border Security/Immigration Legal Defense Fund Established: Yesterday, Governor Jan Brewer announced the hiring of outside legal counsel to defend SB1070 as well as mechanisms to pay for the legal defense of the lawsuits. Governor Jan Brewer has issued Executive Order 2010-11 (attached, and below), detailing the creation of the Governor’s Border Security & Immigration Legal Defense Fund.

The Governor’s Office has already received unsolicited contributions of approximately $10,000.00 from nearly 300 individuals in over 40 states to defend Arizona’s new laws.  Additional procedures are under development to assure full accountability and disclosure of the funds received.  Those wishing to contribute to the fund may continue to send checks payable to the Governor’s Border Security & Immigration Legal Defense Fund, c/o Governor Jan Brewer, 1700 W. Washington St., Phoenix, AZ  85007.

The timing of the sellout by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) could not have been more politically auspicious — or more suspicious. For months the Senator had been denouncing the secrecy of the Federal Reserve’s bailout operations, which have exceeded two trillion dollars. For months he had been pledging that he would push for a genuine audit of the Fed. He authored an amendment in the Senate identical to “Audit the Fed” legislation in the House (H.R. 1207) authored by Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas).

However, on May 6 Sanders caved in to pressures from the Obama administration, the Federal Reserve, and Wall Street. The “who-how-why” details behind the flip-flop are still largely unknown, but here is the “what” of the matter: In a last-minute switch, Sanders agreed to substitute a watered-down version of the audit as an amendment to financial reform legislation sponsored by Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.).

The new Sanders amendment would provide the administration, the Fed, and Members of Congress with a certain level of cover, allowing them to claim that they had supported auditing the Fed, while at the same time allowing the Fed to continue most of its operations in secret, beyond the scrutiny of Congress and the public. The effort to push the Sanders amendment through on a rush vote on May 6 failed thanks to the efforts of Senator David Vitter (R-La.) a fierce Fed critic, who insisted on a side-by-side vote of the San-ders sellout amendment with the original audit amendment. Those two votes came the following Tuesday, May 11, with the original Sanders amendment (now known as the Vitter amendment) failing on a vote of 37 to 62, and the Sanders sellout amendment passing 96 to 0.

Let me preface this by saying I’m not fan of the Paulies and some of their rude, pushy tendencies. With that, the recent email blast from MoveOn’s Steven Biel must be addressed as the deliberate race-baiting trash it is.

In recent weeks, Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul has repeatedly criticized the Civil Rights Act of 1964, saying that private businesses should not be banned from discriminating on the basis of race.

While his campaign spokesman said Paul believes the government should be able to ban racial discrimination, many observers are finding it impossible to draw that conclusion from statements made by Paul himself.

Now is a good time to either question Biel’s grasp of American history or his willingness to carry on the Democrat Party’s shameful tradition of pitting one race against the other for political gain.

I say MoveOn’s Biel may be ignorant of civil rights history because his Democrat Party is the last group of people who should be lecturing anyone on support of the 1964 Act:

Taxpayers Win, No Tax Rate Hike Ok’d

Office of Councilman Sal DiCiccio, District 6

602-262-7491

Phoenix taxpayers earned a great (and rare) win on Tuesday when the Phoenix City Council voted unanimously to hold the property tax rate and to make up the expected deficit with spending cuts, innovations and structural changes.

“This is a huge victory for Phoenix taxpayers, but it’s only one step on the long road to fiscal stability for Phoenix,” said Councilman Sal DiCiccio, who supported holding down the rate. City staff originally had recommended a series of secondary property tax rate increases in out years that would have meant higher property tax rates in the city from 2013 until 2028.
